I'm newbish to unity but I'd say check out Brackeys on youtube if trying to learn how to make a side scroller. As far as I know, pretty sure I did it myself when testing, you can put 3D objects in a 2D project so it's basically just making a 2D platformer with more than just 2D sprites.
